Hotel St. Helene

History

Hotel St. Helene is located directly next door to the Napoleon House, a favorite among locals and tourists alike. This newly renovated courtyard hotel has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior in 1965.

The St. Helene-French Quarter was built in memory of Napoleon Bonaparte. On December 20, 1803, needing funds to continue his military campaign, he sold Louisiana to the U.S. for $15,000,000 in Bonds and indemnities. Defeated by the British at Waterloo in 1815 rejected by the French nation some six months later, he surrendered to the British ship, Bellerophon, and was taken prisoner to the island of St. Helena, where he died on May 5, 1821 at the age of 51. This hotel is dedicated to the memory of Napoleon.
